In The Black (see In The Red)

Meaning: To have money in the bank.  Before computers, all bank records were done in pen and pencil.  If you didn't owe the bank money they would give you a bank statement that used black pencil or ink.  The opposite of this idiom is in the red. 
How to use in a sentence: Joe was the black with the bank at last.  He had finally payed off he bank loan.  He had been in the red for a long time and was relieved to finally be in the black..
